Hi, I'm Max aka. Waldehead

I’m an M.Sc. in Molecular Biology currently doing a PhD in Bioinformatics. Basically, I traded pipettes for R scripts and genomic data processing.

When I'm not staring at a screen for work, i'm hanging out with friends playing boardgames or imagining adventures while playing pen and paper. If I’m not doing that, I’m probably out on my bike, experimenting in the kitchen, stuck in a rabbit hole trying to setup a new software or listening to the new vinyl i bought.

My Homelab

My homelab (aka. my 6 sqm office that i'm sharing with my turtle) is where I experiment with my server and 3D printer. I prefer hosting my own tools to keep my data under my own roof. Or the roof from my landlady. And sometimes it's just fun to tinker and create my own solutions (with software from others) to my own (non-exisitng) problems.

Selfhosted Software Stack

  • Docker: Containerization
    • Mealie: Recipe database
    • Barassistant: Same, just for cocktails
    • Immich: Photo and video management
    • Jellyfin: Media server
    • Homeassistant: Home automation
    • Glances: Stats
    • Dashy: Dashboard
    • Excalidraw: Handwriting sketchboard
    • RStudio: For remote (work related) coding sessions
    • Open-webui: Selfhosted AI
    • Portainer: Container management
    • Mopidy: Music streaming
    • File Browser: File managing interface for my LV
  • FoundryVTT: Online PnP sessions
  • OctoPrint Control center for my 3D printer
  • Caddy: Web server & reverse proxy
  • Kodi: Entertainment center

Most of these are hosted on my server. However, Mopidy, OctoPrint and Kodi are running on three different Raspberry Pis.

Hardware

  • ThinkStation P710
  • OS: Fedora Linux (Server Edition)
  • CPU: Intel Xeon E5-2620 v4 (16) @ 3.00 GHz
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 710
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4
  • SWAP: 16GB
  • Boot Drive: 250GB SATA-SSD
  • Storage: 15TB logical volume
    • 2 6TB HDDs
    • 1 3TB HDD

PC
  • OS: Bazzite
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 2700X (16) @ 3.70 GHz
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4
  • SWAP: 8GB
  • Boot Drive: 500GB NVME SSD
  • Storage: 2TB NVME SSD

Laptop
  • Dell Inspiron 14 7440 2-in-1
  • OS: Fedora Linux (Workstation Edition)
  • CPU: Intel Core 7 150U (12)
  • GPU: integrated
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4
  • SWAP: 8GB
  • Boot Drive: 500GB NVME SSD

Networking

Two switches, a few LAN cables, a FritzBox, Wireguard and DynDNS and i can reach my homelab from everywhere.

3D printer

A Sovol SV06 in an IKEA LACK enclosure. Just so i can create even more solutions to my (non-existing) problems.

Bioinformatics Research

My current PhD focus involves transcriptomics and alternative splicing by analysing high-throughput sequencing data like:

  • traditional RNA-Seq
  • ChIP-Seq
  • iCLip2
  • miRNA-Seq
  • Niche RNA-Seq modifications
